Dr. Khaled Shawkat

Dr Khaled Shawkat is the Deputy Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament. He was elected Member of the Tunisian Parliament in 2014 as a representative of the Nidaa Tunis/ Call of Tunisia movement affiliated with the Call of Tunisia Party established by the Tunisian president Beji Caid Essebsi in 2012. Shawkat completed his Baccalaureate degree from the secondary institute of Maknassy, Sidi Bou Zid (1989); holder of a law degree from Mohammed the First University in Oujda, Kingdom of Morocco (1994); an International Law Degree from the Academy of International Law in The Hague, The Netherlands (1995); and a PhD from Leiden University, the Netherlands with his thesis on “The political participation of Muslims in the West” (2000).  Shawkat was a lecturer and a visiting professor at many universities, academies, Arab and European Higher Institutes tackling subjects related to political science, Islamic studies, international law, human rights, minorities, and the media since 2000. Shawkat is one of the founders of the Majed Party ; he is also the president of the party’s national council (2011); he was the secretary general  of the Free National Solidarity Party (2012); a member of the steering committee of the Call of Tunisia Movement (2013); a member of the Foreign Press Association of The Netherlands since 1995; the secretary general of the Tunisian Center for Democracy and Development (1999-2001); a member of the Arab National Congress, Beirut, Lebanon (1999-2005); a member of the executive committee of the Arab Youth Camp, Beirut, Lebanon (2001-2005); president of the Arab Forum of The Netherlands (1999-2011); member of the municipal council of Rotterdam (2002-2006); director general of the Center for the Democracy Support in the Arab World, The Hague, The Netherlands (2004-2008); president of the Arab Human Rights Organization, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2008-2009); and President of the Arab Institute for Democracy in Tunisia since 2012.
